The Flying Boat Era: Sikorsky Aircraft
Pan American World Airways founder Mr. Juan Trippe and his aviation consultant, Mr. Charles Lindbergh, pressed for improvements in the S-40 design and capabilities. Starting in 1934, the first three Sikorsky S-42 were delivered to Pan American Airways. These offered better aerodynamics through wing flaps, variable pitch propellers, and a full length hull. Overall, ten Sikorsky aircraft were added to the fleet.
