In the 1930s, pilot uniforms switched to sleek, professional uniforms based on sea captain uniforms. A quick glance at commercial airline pilots and ship captain uniforms reveals some striking similarities. At the same time, commercial airline pilots’ uniforms bear little resemblance to their military pilot uniform counterparts. In the earliest days, the opposite was true. Pilot uniforms have evolved over the years, but the largest change came in the 1930s when Pan Am introduced its transatlantic Clipper flying boats.
